Ages 9 - 17

Students age 7 - 9 years of age will be accepted on a case-by-case basis.

STUDENTS WITH ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE ARE WELCOME IN OUR PROGRAM!

We do consider prior experience in auditions, but what's even better is your enthusiasm, directability and a fierce work ethic!

Stop the presses! This Disney film turned Tony-winning Broadway hit inspires everyone to fight for what's right and seize the day.

It's time to carry the banner on your stage with Disney's Newsies! Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right!

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.

AND THE CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS.

PREPARING FOR YOUR AUDITION
1

SINGING

You will be singing a capella for our Director, Producer and Musical Director.  Pick any song from the show that you feel suits you.

During rehearsals you will be working one-on-one with our musical director to finesse and develop your vocal technique.

2

MOVEMENT

All levels and abilities are considered.  We may ask to see some dance steps at your audition (we will teach you these steps in advance).

3

ACTING/SCENES

We will send you sides from the script to study. Familiarize yourself with the show and the characters in the show... pay attention to their distinct personalities and character traits.  We will give you lots of pointers to get prepared!

In rehearsals you will receive plenty of coaching on your acting and insight in to how to become stronger at the craft of acting and build on your technique.

CAMP DETAILS:

What sets our summer camp experience apart from other theatre camps?

Our camps are longer than the average theatre summer camp*, allowing our students to explore their artistry more deeply.

*And because of this extended rehearsal period, we are more likely to be able to work with and around your other vacation plans! More info about that, below!

A longer rehearsal period means a stronger and tighter quality production.

It provides our students with ample time to build a character instead of just

play a role... and not merely learn choreography and songs but actually improve their movement technique and singing skills. As a result, your child will grow leaps and bounds in their self-esteem through a transformative session with ACT-1.

On a social level, it also gives our students more time to make connections and deepen their friendships within our theatre community. It is an unforgettable growth experience and a chance to make lasting friendships and meaningful connections with other artists. Especially after the last couple of years, this is such an important and cherished part of production.

And our staff loves that we get the chance to get to know our students more personally.

With the extended camp hours, we have extra time during the camp day for recreation, instead of just working towards a finished product. We have downtime, playing theatre games, and partaking in interesting workshops with visiting guest artists.

Many of our students tell us, "this was the best summer of my life!"

ORIENTATION DATE

Mandatory Orientation for all interested or enrolling families:

We will be answering any questions you have as well as addressing what to prepare for auditions!   At least one parent is required to attend (with the enrolling student).

SAT, MAY 28 @ 10:00am on ZOOM

DANCE WORKSHOPS

Enrolling students are recommended to attend our NEWSIES Dance Workshops. Students will get their feet wet with the styles of the dance we'll be doing in the show, be given specific skills to work on, and we may ask for a demonstration of choreography in their audition.

*Not all of the roles in Newsies require knowledge of dance, so please do not be intimated or discouraged from enrolling if you don't consider yourself a dancer/mover!
